Gov. Jim Justice puts a stop to extra benefits

CHARLESTON, WV (WOAY) – It’s because of the pandemic that many are getting an extra $300 with their unemployment checks, but as of June 19th Governor Jim Justice says that will be no more.

It is something that continues to draw controversy. Some think the extra money encourages people to not return to work, but the governor is offering a bonus incentive for those who return to work for a minimum of 90 days.

In a virtual press briefing on COVID-19, our reporter Emmie Keenan asked what happens if people collect the bonus and then quit their job.

“If after 90 days these people want to go home and sit on their porch, let them go home and sit on their porch. Hopefully we’ll have a ton of people coming to West Virginia, and hopefully they’ll be coming wanting to work.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, for every job opening there is someone to fill the position here in West Virginia.

Justice says America is about work, and it’s time to start that again.
