Frigid Blast Slowly On The Mend; Record Power Usage During Outbreak

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): The coldest temperatures of the season are now behind us, but that doesn’t mean we are finished with winter.

A low pressure will trigger a few snow showers after 9 p.m. today through 4 p.m. Friday. None of the snow will accumulate on the main roads; only shady spots on the secondary roads will see a dusting. The weekend will be dry and warmer. Another front could trigger a few flurries Tuesday. The coldest temperatures of the year are now behind us.

The top 12 peak winter load days for power/electric usage for the Mid-Atlantic are seen below. Note, we set two records for this cold blast, this morning at 7:50 a.m. and Wednesday morning at 8:15 a.m. This coincides with the perfect combination of almost the coldest part of the morning, folks who work later in the day waking up, turning on lights, etc., and businesses starting to turn on the lights for the day. The other days in the top 10 list occurred during very cold Januarys/Februarys in the East.

The graph below shows the temperature of the snowpack lags with the outdoor air temperature. The coldest snowpack temperature lags behind the air temperature by 2 hours, so normally at 7 a.m., we reach the low temperature of the day and then two hours later is when the snowpack is the coldest. The afternoon high temperature is reached 1-2 hours before the snowpack is the warmest. This can explain why it feels colder in the morning after sun-up and a pinch milder around sunset (obviously, the wind chill factors into how it feels for us).
