LEWISBURG, WV (WOAY) – A former Greenbrier County sheriff’s deputy has been convicted on sexual abuse charges.
The state police and West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources began investigating Christopher W. Bennett after receiving allegations of sexual assault and abuse.
According to the Greenbrier County sheriff’s office, he was immediately placed on leave to “ensure the integrity of the investigation and the safety of the community.”
The sheriff’s office also launched its own internal investigation.
On January 3, Bennett entered a guilty plea to first-degree sexual abuse charges.
The Greenbrier Sheriff’s office says it does not tolerate behavior like Bennett’s, and is continuing to prioritize the “safety and well-being of our citizens.”
