The coldest temperatures of the season will descend upon southern West Virginia Thursday and will likely prompt a cold weather alert for part of our region.
Recall in the past, Wind Chill Advisories were issued when the feel-like temperature dropped below minus-10 degrees for western Greenbrier and western Pocahontas County and minus-5 degrees or colder for the remainder of southern West Virginia. The Wind Chill Warning criteria is minus-15 degrees for most of our region, except western Pocahontas and Greenbrier County where the criteria is minus-20 degrees.
For the first time this year, a Cold Weather Advisory replaces the Wind Chill Advisory. So, on the settings for alerts for which you would like to receive notifications on the StormWatch 4 weather app, it’s still listed as Wind Chill Advisory. You will still receive a Cold Weather Advisory if tripped by the weather service. The Wind Chill Warning naming convention has been updated to Extreme Cold Warning in the StormWatch 4 app.
Western Pocahontas County’s wind chill will drop very close to minus-10 degrees Thursday night while the remainder of the region will see wind chills hover around 0 degrees. You will see the Cold Weather Advisory pop up on your phone if it’s tripped by the weather service for western Pocahontas County on Thursday ahead of the cold night ahead.
