FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY)- For some kids, school is the only place where they can get breakfast or lunch. So many wonder what they are going to do when it comes to getting a meal. Well, Fayette County Schools wants to continue to provide students with a well-balanced meal all summer long.
“Hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation,” said Andrew Pense, Nutrition Director at Fayette County Schools.
Fayette County schools will be offering free meals for kids this summer. The summer food service program is for anyone under the age of 18 to come by and grab a meal.
Kids work up an appetite doing fun things throughout the summer. They’re going to be, you know, doing summer school. They’re going to be at different parks. So we’re trying to be where the kids are and provide them with a nutritious meal,” explained Pense.
They’ll be serving food at 8 different locations around the county. They’ll also have different items kids can enjoy throughout the summer.
“We have a burger, bratwurst, gyro, loaded baked potato, and nachos,” said Maggie Short, Program Chef at Fayette County Schools. “We’re going to offer different things, most of it will be the same, but there be a few locations that will have different things. We’re trying to find creative ways to use locally sourced food.”
This program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They also received a plant grant from them and the Chef Anne Foundation to have a chef work on this program.
