Dry weather awaits as potential for rain exists next weekend

It’s been a fairly chilly and gloomy day today across southern West Virginia. A good sweatshirt day that felt like fall and while we are going to slowly warm up, the temperatures will stay near average. Dry weather is also going to be the main show for at least the next 6 days. A high pressure system is going to be setting up over the coast of Virginia/North Carolina, or just off the coast and will be funneling dry air into our area. Models are in question when exactly this high pressure system will leave the area and two of the main models we look at show opposite things.

The European model shown below, highlights the high pressure still in our region Sunday afternoon and the majority of rain moving through the southern USA. This model also doesn’t show much of anything developing or strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico. That shows why the European model keeps us fairly dry. Looking at the GFS model and that shows the futurecast rainfall being quite a bit more across our area over the next 7 days. The majority of this comes through during the day next Sunday. Still a swath of less rain across our counties, but with the GFS showing around a quarter inch of rain, that’s a lot more than the European projecting zero to maybe a hundredth of an inch across our area over the next 7 days. The big difference in this is that the GFS model shows some type of tropical disturbance impacting the Gulf Coast that drags moisture up into our area next Sunday. This is definitely something to watch the trend of over the next couple of days to see if the models come to agreement on what happens in the Gulf.

Looking at the full 7 day forecast, mostly sunny skies will be present across southern West Virginia as temperatures slowly warm to the low 70’s. The chance of rain exists on Sunday, although it’s low, due to the low confidence in tropical development in the Gulf.
