OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It has been a much warmer day around southern West Virginia than it was yesterday. Sunday morning’s low was -1 in Beckley, but today’s high was 46 degrees in both Beckley and Bluefield. It’s the first time in nearly three weeks that the two cities have seen above normal highs!
Tonight, we’ll drop into the lower 30s in most areas, with upper 20s in the usual colder spots. This could lead to possible issues on untreated roads, as some of the snow that has melted could re-freeze.
Tomorrow we’re expecting highs in the middle 50s as an approaching low-pressure center brings in downright mild air. The last time that we were as mild as 56 in Beckley (the forecasted high) was on December 29th. Remember that we were in the 60s during the final days of 2025 and early days of 2026 before the cold snap that we just emerged from took hold. As the day goes on, we begin to see the clouds thicken, and later in the day, a chance for rain will come into the forecast.
Late tomorrow night, some snow could mix in, especially in the higher elevations, but most of the precipitation should fall as rain, with little snow accumulation.
After the first system is gone, temperatures settle into a near-normal pattern, with highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s and lows in the 20s and 30s.
Another, more powerful, storm pushes into the region later this week and into the weekend.
As has been the case with our winter storms, the two major models are vastly different in terms of timing of the storm, although other factors are more in line with one another. Chances for rain are good on both weekend days, with some snow once again mixing in during the early morning hours. Totals are expected to be high area-wide over the next few days.
We’ll be monitoring the rain on top of the snow piles to see if the combination of the two causes any creeks or streams to rise, but for now, we think that chance is small. As always, we’ll be tracking it for you.
