Colder than normal this week, with showers

It was a cold and cloudy start to the work week, as temperatures struggled to get into the 40s around the area this afternoon. Fog is helping to make for a slower than usual afternoon commute as well – visibilities were 1.25 miles at the Raleigh County Memorial Airport at 3 p.m.
We saw a light mist now at the airport as well, and snow is possible later tonight, especially in the higher elevation locations. There are Freeze Watches for areas to our north and northwest but not for our area, as the growing season has not begun yet. This after we topped out at 83 degrees on Saturday afternoon!
After a dreary night tonight, skies clear as we go through the day tomorrow, but with high pressure in charge and cold air streaming into the region from the polar latitudes, highs will only be in the lower 40s, about 20 degrees colder than the normal! In addition, there will be some wind to make it feel even colder. The cold air slowly backs off by the middle of the week, and with winds shifting around to the southwest, highs will rebound into the middle to upper 50s by Wednesday but will stay below the normal throughout the extended forecast.
Also, later this week, there is a chance for showers as another low-pressure center makes its way into the region from the northwest, pushing across the Great Lakes. A secondary low passing to our south on Friday means another chance for showers. Some snow showers on the back side of this secondary low could fall in the higher elevations. A potent low, passing over the western Great Lakes, means another round of showers early next week, so the active weather pattern continues.
