Coal miner killed on the job in West Virginia, marking fourth in the state this year

Sharples, WV (AP)- A coal miner has died on the job in West Virginia, marking the fourth coal miner death in the state this year.   

33-year-old Gary Chapman from South Williamson, Kentucky, suffered fatal injuries at the Mountaineer II Mine near Sharples on Friday night.  

Governor Jim Justice says Chapman and his family are in his prayers.   

At least eight U.S. coal miners have died on the job in 2024, according to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.  

The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training and the Mine Safety and Health Administration are investigating the incident.
