Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony ringing in holiday season on December 4 to honor West Virginia National Guard members

Charleston, WV (WOAY) Governor Patrick Morrisey and First Lady Denise Morrisey invite families statewide to ring in the holiday season at the annual Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, December 4.

Festivities begin at 6 p.m. on the State Capitol steps along Kanawha Boulevard.

This year’s event includes a special dedication in memory of U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe and U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, with a moment of silence in their honor.

The ceremony will be available to watch via live-stream courtesy of West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

The event will feature performances by the Capital High School band and choir, the River City Youth Ballet, and community Christmas sing-alongs.

After the ceremony, families are invited to head to the West Virginia Culture Center for cookies, hot chocolate, photos with Santa, Mrs. Claus, an elf, live reindeer, crafts, and more holiday fun.

The Children’s Home Society of West Virginia will host a coat and toy donation drive, with a special need this year for gifts for older children.

Guests can drop off donations at the Culture Center or on the Capitol steps.

Free parking will be provided at the Capitol Complex garage and Laidley Field.

Shuttle services will run from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The city will close Kanawha Boulevard at 4:00 p.m. for the event.
