Calmer Days Before Valentine’s Weekend Storm

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): After a few lingering showers in the southern coalfields, conditions will settle down and stay calm for the rest of the work week. Partly sunny skies will persist from this afternoon through Thursday before clouds dissipate more for Friday and early Saturday.

Temperatures will be down for the next couple of days, but they reach back into the 40s for Friday and beyond. These above-freezing temperatures will continue to slowly chip away at the ice piles, but rainy conditions this weekend will accelerate that process. Unfortunately, some areas are likely to get a mix of rain and snow, which could complicate things Sunday and Monday morning. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details:

Valentine’s Day starts on a nice note with temperatures in the mid-30s and mostly sunny skies. The daytime hours will be calm, so any plans for lunch or an early dinner should go off without a hitch. If you plan on going out later in the night, you may be less fortunate in terms of the weather. A mix of rain and snow starts to fall overnight as the low-pressure system approaches. Our western and southern counties are likely to stay rainy throughout, but the eastern half of the region gets more wintry mix.

These conditions last through all of Sunday as the system barrels through the region. Depending on how much rain falls, we could see minor flooding issues in streams and creeks. Frozen-over rivers and streams may experience ice jams, which will cause flooding in those surrounding areas. While not every river or stream will flood, it is a good idea to be prepared for minor flooding. Rain will switch to a wintry mix and/or all snow later in the day, especially in the higher elevations. Accumulation of snow in the high country and Greenbrier Valley is still uncertain, but it is trending to be lighter thanks to the mixing with rain.

The storm leaves Sunday night, and showers linger a little longer. By Monday morning, roads will be wet with slick icy spots possible. Make sure to be careful out there on the morning commute. Conditions will get much better later in the day with temperatures rising into the lower 50s and skies becoming mostly sunny. This milder and sunnier trend continues through the first half of the work week. Here’s your 7-Day Forecast:
