West Virginia (WOAY)- In Braxton County, a jury has returned guilty verdicts in a harrowing case of child abuse and neglect.
Following a four-day trial, jurors convicted Carl William “Bill” James and Robin Louise James on multiple felony charges.
The case began on October 27th, 2023, when Deputy Levi Cochran responded to a neighbor’s home after a child disclosed years of sexual abuse.
The child was in James’ custody from the age of six until fourteen.
After speaking with the child, Deputy Cochran visited the home.
Upon entry, Cochran discovered animal feces and urine throughout the residence, holes in the floors and walls, and swarms of gnats and insects, leading to an immediate arrest for felony gross child neglect.
Interviews at the Tri-County Child Advocacy Center resulted in additional charges.
Authorities arrested Carl James on multiple counts of sexual assault and abuse, all involving a child under the age of 12.
Police also arrested Robin James on additional counts of neglect for failing to protect the child, despite being told about the abuse on three separate occasions.
The court convicted Carl James of six felony charges, including First Degree Sexual Assault, Sexual Abuse by a Parent or Guardian, and Gross Child Neglect.
Robin James earned four felony counts of Gross Child Neglect, three related to her failure to intervene.
Robin James’ sentencing hearing is on July 3, and she faces up to 20 years behind bars.
Carl James faces up to 195 years in prison, pending a mandatory sex offender evaluation.
They are awaiting further court proceedings in Central Regional Jail.
