OAK HILL, WV (WOAY)- Many phones and technology in general have the ability to connect via Bluetooth. However, hackers have the know-how to hack your device via Bluetooth and that is called bluesnarfing.
Bluesnarfing utilizes an unsecured Bluetooth connection to access personal data like contacts, messages, pictures, videos, and even your passwords. Depending on the type of Bluetooth device, this type of hacking can be done as far as 300 feet away from the victim.
These attacks lie in the vulnerability connected with the Obex, meaning object exchange, protocol, which is a type of security flaw that hackers exploit.
Thankfully, updates to Bluetooth technology have tried to resolve this issue by having people authenticate the connection. However, the best way to avoid these cyber attacks to to turn off your Bluetooth when it is not needed.
