BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The Salvation Army has a rich history of music programs, with brass band among its founding traditions, dating back to 1865 London.
They used brass bands to preach the gospel on the streets and it protected whoever was preaching.
“The Salvation Army has used brass bands for over 159 years to really proclaim the gospel, to draw attention,” said Captain Liz Blusiewisz. “Because people when they hear the band and the bass drum they’re like, ‘what is going on’ and then it draws people in.”
Captain Liz found pictures of the Beckley Salvation Army’s 1948 brass band and thought they needed to renew that tradition.
“We had the idea to start a brass band right here for adults and for kids,” she said they now have both. “We want to teach kids the joy of music and for adults, just gather and have a great time.”
Before her time in the Salvation Army, Captain Liz was a Baltimore music teacher. With a background in trumpet and now cornet, she’s passionate about music and making a difference. When they work with those in and out of difficult situations…
“Music is a way to express ourselves without having to use words,” said the captain. “And so for me it’s a great release, a stress reliever, and a great way to meet community members who are like-minded musicians — who just want to play and make music.”
Join them 7 to 9pm every Monday night in the new Salvation Army building. Their brass band has some beginners, others more experienced, even a guy who played with the Marines. Captain Liz says its a fun, positive, encouraging group; and it gets them out.
“For adults, you know, we don’t get a lot of opportunities to play,” said the captain. “So this is a great opportunity for adults who may have played in high school and just haven’t found that outlet. We want to be that outlet for Beckley.”
They are gearing up for a small November 10 performance. Throughout Christmas season you’ll catch the ensemble out and about playing carols — old school at the Salvation Army kettle. Captain liz says they’ll have more community concerts as they get better.
“Folks can just come on out,” she said. “You can call to give me a heads up what instrument you play. “We take cornets, e-flat horn, e-flat tuba, b-flat tuba, trombone, baritone and euphonium. Yeah, it’s awesome.”
