BECKLEY, WV (WOAY)- The Beckley Rotary Club partnered with the Raleigh County Commission on Aging to help get “Stop the Bleed” kits to senior citizens.
They work with their foundation to receive money for these efforts. They will be spending up to $4,000 to get these kits to people who need them. The members who get trained on these kits will tag along on trips with the commission’s Meals on Wheels program to give these kits out.
The club strives to help the community in any way it can, and this project is a great example of just that.
“So this project was chosen by our foundation leader and community chair, and they work together and come together with ideas that work for our community. Then looking at funding and how it supports, we really try to find those needs,” said Jonathan Grose, President of Beckley Rotary Club. “Those niches of where people, and I hate to use the word forgotten, but really they are. We have seniors that are in homes that only see that person that delivers that meal to their house, maybe that one time a week, and then they have no more connection with the community or the environment. So those are people that are really could be in a distress situation if something happened to them. So we look for areas in our projects that really speak to the community, that are able to give back to the community in a meaningful way.”
However these kits are not just for senior citizens, they can be used for anyone of any age. These kits can stop bleeding from minor cuts to severe bleeding wounds. The kits are available to purchase at a local drugstore.
Ann Worley, with the Rotary Club, gives an example of how people can utilize these kits.
“This [the kit] has five hemostatic patches in it,” explained Worley. “So when you get a cut, say, on your hands, this has a gel in it that you put the gel on and then you put a Band-Aid on it. Of course, and it will stop the bleeding until you can get, you know, good medical attention.”
