Beckley City Council to swear-in interim city manager on Feb. 28

When the Beckley City Manager resigned Mayor Ryan Neal said it was a setback.

So he and the city council discussed what the path forward looked like.

According to Neal, they agreed not to rush and hire a new permanent city manager just yet.

City Council voted last night to hire Phil Jarrell as interim city manager, who the mayor has known for decades.

Jarrell will be sworn in on Friday, February 28 at 9 am.

“He’s a numbers guy, deals with budgets and everything else, which is what city council and I talked about that’s something needed with the city right now,” Neal said. “We think it’s going to be a great help.”

As for how long Jarrell will hold the position, the mayor says they talked about maybe 90 days.

“But I’m not sure what the actual contract is,” said Neal. “It may be until we find a new permanent city manager. Phil Jarrell has been in the community forever. It’s a perfect hire I think at this point. So good for city council.”
