Charleston, WV (WOAY)—This weekend, the heart of Charleston will come alive with the sights, sounds, and stories of Appalachia as the 48th Vandalia Gathering takes over the State Capitol grounds.
The free, family-friendly festival celebrates West Virginia’s rich cultural heritage with traditional music, dance, storytelling, local crafts, and Appalachian cuisine.
The festivities kick off Friday night at 6:30 in the State Theater with an awards ceremony and the prestigious 2025 Vandalia Award, honoring outstanding contributions to West Virginia folklife.
New this year, a cycling watch party will occur along Greenbrier Street behind the Culture Center.
It’s a prime spot to catch the Pro Road National Championships, and it features inflatables, food trucks, and a beer garden for guests 21 and over.
Saturday and Sunday bring a packed schedule of events—from fiddle, banjo, and mandolin contests to gospel music, traditional dance, and concerts by local musicians.
Young musicians will have the chance to compete in youth categories.
And don’t miss Sunday’s Liars Contest—where tall tales win big with Goldenseal Magazine’s coveted Golden Shovel Award.
Kids can enjoy crafts and storytelling in the Old-Time for Young’ Uns area, while adults can shop for traditional foods and official Vandalia Gathering gear.
Free parking is available throughout the Capitol Complex.
