HINTON, WV (WOAY)- It was 7:53 Wednesday morning when Sergeant J.K Weiss of the state police received a call that there was a bomb threat at Summers County High School. That’s when the clock began ticking to get students out.
The call was from the Beckley State Police Dispatch, according to Sergeant Weiss. The school started evacuating students and busing them to the old middle school gymnasium.
“We followed our procedures and protocols. Students were evacuated within 5 minutes,” explained Stephanie Cochran, Assistant Principal at Summers County High School. “Every student was cleared from the building, and the police took over from there, and everybody was safe.”
The school then made a post to their Facebook page to notify parents of the situation.
Once the students were out of the school, the Summer’s County Sheriff’s Department, the state police, and 3 different K-9 units were on the scene. The K-9 units from the state police, Fayette, and Mercer counties then cleared the building for bombs.
After it was all clear, the students, who were not picked up by parents, were brought back around noon to continue the day until dismissal around 3 pm.
This bomb threat is still under investigation by the west virginia state police, and I will be in direct contact with them about the situation. So if any more details come out, I’ll be sure to keep you all updated.
