Active Weather Kicks off Today

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): The morning has started off on a calmer note, but a few showers will develop later in the commute. Showers and storms will become widespread this afternoon as the first of several disturbances passes through. The main concern for today is heavy rainfall. With how dry the soil has been along with low water levels in rivers and creeks, most of the region should be able to handle the incoming rain. However, if an area ends up receiving multiple downpours in a short amount of time, there could be some minor ponding of water in vulnerable areas.

Most storms will be typical for the summer season, dropping beneficial rain and bringing thunder and lightning. If thunder roars, head indoors! A couple of stronger storms are possible, though severe weather is not expected today. Cloud cover this morning is limiting instability a bit, and any stronger storms will weaken in the evening before reaching severe criteria. After the sun sets, showers and storms will continue to pass overnight but will remain weaker. This is just the start of the active pattern, which is much-needed. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the latest forecast:

Storms and showers will continue tomorrow, yet again bringing heavier rain into the region. Flash flooding is still unlikely, but ponding of water and other minor issues are possible in areas that experience repeated downpours. The large majority of rain will fall in the morning and afternoon as the frontal system passes by. Storms will remain weaker due to the morning activity. By evening, showers and storms start to break up a bit. The dissipation of rain will continue overnight, leading into a lull in activity on Thursday.

The chance for thunderstorms will be lower, but more sunshine will help raise temperatures and strengthen storms that do end up developing. This chance of storms is conditional, so we could easily stay dry for the entire day. Temperatures will peak in the afternoon, ranging from the mid- to upper 80s. Values may even reaching 90 degrees in a few lower elevation spots. This will be the hottest day of the week, so be sure to have plenty of water and sun protection if it ends up staying dry.

The next disturbance moves through on Friday, bringing another round of needed rain. Again, the chance for heavy rain is there. With the rain coming through for a few days, water issues may arise across the region. The front will push through relatively quickly, which will be followed by a slightly direr weekend. There is a trend signaling the arrival of a brief high-pressure center on Saturday, which is further dropping rain chances. An isolated shower or two is possible still, but it will be the dries day for the next week. Sunday will bring along a few more scattered storms before the third disturbance in seven days passes by early next week. Here’s the 7-Day Forecast:
