OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We started Election Day with nice weather. There was plenty of sunshine in the skies and cool to cold readings on the thermometers. The coldest temperatures were in the Greenbrier Valley and Pocahontas County, with upper 30s in some spots. Dry air continues to hold for now, so wherever you are, temperatures will rise quickly this afternoon, and highs will wind up in the lower to mid-70s.

Temperatures don’t fall as far tonight as they did this morning, but we will see the wind pick up ahead of a front. Low pressure to our northwest will interact with high pressure off the Atlantic coast to produce gusty winds.

Because of the strong winds, lows tonight will be in the lower 50s.
Tomorrow starts off with some sunshine and the aforementioned wind, but as the day goes on, showers will enter the forecast as a front makes its way into the state.

The front is producing some strong to severe storms today over the Midwest and Plains, and those storms will push east overnight and into Wednesday. We’re not expecting severe weather in our area, although there are some indications that thunder might be possible in some of the stronger showers, especially in areas to our south in Virginia and North Carolina. Heavy rain is also a possibility tomorrow and into Thursday, and we’ll be tracking the chance for some ponding water on the roads and gathering water in the usual low-lying spots.

Highs tomorrow and Thursday will be in the mid-to-upper 60s. Lows Wednesday night will be even warmer than they will be tonight, generally in the mid-50s, but by Thursday night we’ll begin to feel the effects of the cool front as lows drop into the upper 40s.
The chance for rain continues into Friday before ending in time for the weekend. It looks like we shouldn’t need rain gear for the high school football plans, but a jacket to keep out the cold will be useful. After the front passes through, lows on Friday night will be in the lower 40s and only go down from there. Highs on both weekend days will be in the mid-50s, the same levels that we’ll see for the lows on Thursday! It will get even cooler – if only by a bit – as we end the forecast. There will also be a small chance for showers as an upper-level disturbance pushes through. The timing of the showers will be key in determining whether we see any wintry precipitation in the highest elevation areas. For now, the thinking is more along the lines of a cold rain.
