OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We are tracking some showers that are making their way through the region today. Some of the showers have been heavy in parts of the southern coalfields, especially in Tazewell and McDowell Counties. Since we haven’t seen rain for a couple of weeks, flooding is not a concern. None of the showers are strong or severe, but they will slow down anyone headed out during the morning and afternoon.
The showers should end by the evening, but the clouds will remain, with only a few peeks of sunshine. That will keep the temperatures in check; highs will only be around 60 degrees in most areas, and some of the higher elevation locations won’t even be able to get that warm. In the southern coalfields, highs will be in the mid-60s.
Tonight, skies will clear, and lows will be in the mid-40s.
Election Day around the region will be a very nice one, with mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine. It’s certainly good weather to get out and vote if you haven’t done so already! Highs will be around 70 degrees, more than 10 degrees above the normal.
Lows tomorrow night will be in the lower 50s, which is closer to the average high (58 in Beckley), compared to the average low (38 in Beckley).
As we go into the middle of the upcoming week, another storm moves through the Great Lakes, dragging a front through the region. After the break on Tuesday, chances for rain return by Wednesday evening and will last through much of Thursday.
Some of the showers could be heavy, and when combined with the rain that fell on Monday, isolated flooding is possible. The Weather Prediction Center has mentioned the possibility of flooding, but the current thinking is that any flooding would be confined to the usual low-lying spots.
Despite the cloud cover and the showers, temperatures will stay mild, with highs in the mid-60s and lows in the mid-50s.
The front leaves cooler air in its wake, and by the end of the week and into the weekend, highs will drop into the mid-50s, which is where the lows will be on Wednesday and Thursday! Lows by Sunday morning will be in the mid-30s. There is a small chance for additional showers on Saturday, but there won’t be much moisture for the next front to work with, so it should be mainly dry.
