West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission awarded $9 million to launch statewide education initiative

West Virginia (WOAY) Thousands of West Virginia students are expected to benefit from a new statewide initiative to help them prepare for college, career training, and the workforce.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) has been awarded $9 million over five years through the U. S. Department of Education’s Talent Search Program to launch Advancing College Education in West Virginia(ACE WV).

The program will serve 3,600 students each year, with a focus on low-income students and those who would be the first in their families to attend college.

Support will begin as early as sixth grade and include tutoring, academic advising, college applications, financial aid assistance, career exploration, and campus visits.

The initiative will also help students explore trade programs, apprenticeships, and industry-recognized credentials, while providing additional support for students facing barriers such as homelessness or foster care.

The higher education policy commission will partner with six state universities to work with middle and high schools across 20 counties, including Raleigh and McDowell counties.

State officials say the goal is to help more students find a path to success, whether that means attending college, earning a career credential, or entering the workforce, while building a stronger future for West Virginia.
