West Virginia (WOAY) Wildlife and West Virginia roadways don’t always mix.
With thousands of miles of highway across the state, collisions between vehicles and animals are a common concern, particularly when it comes to deer.
According to State Farm, West Virginia drivers face about a 1 in 40 chance of hitting a deer or another animal on the road, significantly higher than the national average.
And deer aren’t the only animals drivers may encounter.
Raccoons, coyotes, and bears can also end up in the roadway.
When an animal is killed in the road, West Virginia Division of Highways crews may remove it when it’s considered a traffic hazard.
Drivers who see a dead animal creating a roadway hazard can report it to the WVDOH through the SWAT program by calling 1-833-WVROADS or reporting it online.
