Beckley, WV (WOAY) – Jan-Care Ambulance is opening its emergency medical technician training, previously limited to company employees, to anyone in the community.
The 12-week course combines online coursework with weekly hands-on training at Jan-Care’s training center in Beckley. According to Jan-Care Director Paul Seamann, students as young as 17 can enroll. He said the course is not only for people pursuing a career in emergency medical services.
“If you have an interest in EMS or health care and you want to help your family, you want to be able to serve your communities,” Seamann said. “If you live in an isolated area of the state, which a lot of us do, then this training is top notch.”
Classes begin in November, with a Sunday option for students who work during the week. Seamann said financial aid is available. Graduates are not required to work for Jan-Care. For those who do want to enter the field, Seamann said EMS is growing and employers are looking for qualified people.
“There is a real need out there, as we know, with all health care providers and certainly in our very rural state … it’s vital that we have those numbers of employees out there that are willing to step up and help as they can,” he said.
