Matewan, WV (WOAY) It has been 105 years since Matewan Police Chief Sid Hatfield and his deputy, Ed Chambers, were gunned down on the courthouse steps in Welch.
The West Virginia Mine Wars Museum is commemorating the anniversary with a new piece of merchandise inspired by an original mourning badge honoring the two men.
The badge was one of the first artifacts loaned to the museum in 2015 and remains one of its most popular exhibits.
The museum partnered with West Virginia-based Mountain Mindful to recreate the badge design on a 100% cotton ringer-style T-shirt.
The shirt is available exclusively to museum members, with memberships starting at $5 per month.
The pre-order is open through September 1.
Museum officials say membership not only provides access to exclusive merchandise and a biannual magazine, but also helps preserve Appalachian labor history for future generations.
