Concord University celebrates return of McNair Scholars program

Athens, WV (WOAY) Concord University is celebrating the return of a program that helps students pursue graduate education.

Funding for the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, known as the McNair Scholars program, has been restored after months of uncertainty.

The program lost funding last fall when federal grants were canceled nationwide, but following legal challenges and revisions, funding was reinstated for many TRIO programs, including Concord’s.

University President Bethany Meighen called the decision a tremendous win for students and praised Director Dr. Rodney Klein for his leadership and advocacy.

Klein says the program provides first-generation and low-income students opportunities to conduct research, attend conferences, present their work, and prepare for graduate school.

A new cohort of students from Concord, Bluefield State, and West Virginia State has already begun participating in workshops and traveling to academic conferences.

Any sophomore or junior enrolled at Concord, Bluefield State, or West Virginia State universities interested in becoming a McNair Scholar should stop by the McNair Scholars office on the second floor of the J. Frank Marsh Library, call (304) 384-5222, or send a message to kleinr@concord.edu.

Additional information is also available at the McNair Scholars Program.
