Adult volleyball, summer youth camps at Beckley YMCA

Beckley, WV (WOAY) Registration is open for this summer’s adult co-ed volleyball league at the YMCA of Southern West Virginia. Newswatch visited the Y to ask what players can look forward to this season and see what other sports kids can take part in as well.

Sports and recreation director Josh Bennett says last year’s league of 12 teams had a blast, and he hopes this year will be even better.

“Beginning of July, end of June, somewhere in that time frame is when we’ll start… You’ll be playing on weeknights. You’re looking at probably two games a week for each team, right? About 6 to 8 weeks. Short, but quick, fun, and always a good time for this group.”

Members get a discount, but Bennett says this league is open to anyone in the community, and you don’t have to be a pro to have fun on the volleyball court.

“This league is for everybody. So it doesn’t matter the skill level. Last year was broken down into two divisions of gold and silver: your more competitive, and your less competitive folks who are just kind of there to have a good time and get some exercise in. We’ll do something similar again this year with that.”

Bennett says the league is also a great opportunity for community connection and time with friends and family:

“If you have a bunch of you who want to play together and join as a team, you can do that too. You can send me a whole roster and register everybody. And we’ll put your team in there so you can play with your buddies against your other buddies, and everybody can just have a blast out here.”

For younger athletes, the YMCA also has camps for basketball, soccer, and volleyball this summer. However, Bennett says the Y hopes to be known for more than its youth sports.

“We’re also looking into doing some other adult things. So we may have a night out at the soccer complex or a few weeks where we can just open it up to anybody who wants to come out and play pickup flag football or pickup ultimate frisbee… Our goal is to try to provide for the community. So we’re looking at ways to do more and more of that. So hopefully you’ll see some more of that in the future.”
