WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Chilly temperatures and patchy fog will linger for a little while longer before fading away as the sun continues to shine on our region. If you travel through the fog this morning, be sure to use your low beams and drive slowly. Fog will lift between 9 and 10 AM for most of our region, and temperatures will rise into the upper 60s later this afternoon. Conditions will remain dry tonight, but cloud cover will increase. By tomorrow morning, expect partly sunny conditions for the majority of the day.
The main weather concern for us is the ongoing drought, which has not improved in the last few weeks. While it may feel like it’s been raining consistently, the rainfall totals have been lower than we need. The growing season has kicked off, and not much rain has fallen. When are we going to see improvement? Unfortunately, the short-term and long-term trends do not bring a quick end to the drought. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the latest forecast:
The next chance of rain returns Saturday evening in the form of isolated showers and storms. Most of the activity will be to our west and north, but a few light showers and storms will scrape by before moving away to the northeast. Rainfall will be minimal, and showers will dissipate overnight. After the lighter activity fades, a couple of days of dry and warm weather take hold. Temperatures will reach the mid-80s on Sunday and the upper 80s on Monday. With highs in the upper 80s to start next week, a few daily temperature records for May 18th may be broken. The combination of dry, warm weather from Sunday to Tuesday will expand our drought and increase the risk of wildfires in our region.
The next good chance of rain does not show up until Tuesday night next week. A cold front will slowly approach from the Midwest, bringing some scattered activity to the region overnight. These showers and storms will become widespread on Wednesday as the cold front passes, finally bringing a decent amount of rain to our region. While this will not be the 10 to 11 inches of rain we need to end the drought within a month, it will be beneficial to our environment.
