AWAY hosting Denim Day Fun Run/Walk on April 25 in Summersville

Summersville, WV (WOAY) AWAY, formerly known as the Women’s Resource Center, is encouraging people to take a stand against sexual violence one step at a time.

AWAY is hosting its Denim Day Fun Run/Walk event on Saturday, April 25, to help break the silence surrounding sexual violence.

The event will take place from 10:00 a.m to noon at the Nicholas County Veterans Memorial Park in Summersville.

Registration for the run will begin at 9:30 am with the run taking off at 10:00 a.m.

Registration for the walk will begin at 10:30 am, with the walk beginning at 11:00 am.

Organizers are encouraging community members to bring donations of new denim clothing and take part in the walk or run to show support for survivors and help raise awareness.

Denim Day is recognized on the last Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court overturning a rape conviction because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who raped her remove them, thereby implying consent.

Following the reversal, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.
