Elkview, WV (WOAY) A Kanawha County man has passed away following an incident with an ambulance.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office reports that at approximately 2:15 a.m. on April 16, 2026, two female Kanawha County EMS employees discovered a man near the Elkview detachment.
The man, later identified as 45-year-old John Curtis Lucas of Clendenin, was reportedly wandering around the area, wearing a trench coat and believed to be armed with a knife.
The employees left the area, fearing for their safety.
While driving along Railroad Avenue near Tudor’s Biscuit World, Lucas reportedly ran from beside the building and jumped in front of the ambulance.
Authorities believed he was still armed with the knife when he allegedly landed on the hood of the vehicle and ultimately fell as the ambulance continued moving.
The EMS workers called Metro 911 to report the incident, and Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered Lucas lying along U.S. Route 119 in critical condition.
Emergency medical personnel transported him to a local hospital, where he later passed away due to his injuries.
This incident remains under active investigation by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office
