Oil Spill in Wyoming County

Wyoming County, WV (WOAY) – The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is responding to a transformer oil spill in Wyoming County.

The oil spill happened at an Appalachian Power substation in the Clear Fork area.

The oil escaped the concrete containment pad and entered Reedy Branch of Clear Fork. The WVDEP received a spill report at 8 a.m. Friday, and sent out staff to inspect it.

Most of the oil was contained, but some managed to get into a nearby stream. Remedial actions are ongoing.

Appalachian Power has an environmental contractor on site, cleaning up the spill. The WVDEP also sent out its homeland security emergency response personnel to help out.

The West Virginia Department of Health has been made aware of the spill and has informed public water systems further downstream.

This is the second oil spill from an Appalachian power substation this month. Oil leaked from a transformer in Wayne County after a vandalism incident.

There has been no cause released for the Wyoming County leak yet.
