How to Keep Your New Year’s Fitness Goals From Fading Fast

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – Every January, gyms across the country fill up with people determined to make this the year they finally get fit. But statistics show that most fade out fast, with nearly 23% with fitness resolutions dropping out within the first week.

So how do you make sure your goals stick? Trainers at Anytime Fitness in Oak Hill say success comes down to more than just good intentions.

Start With the Right Mindset
Club Manager Joelene Rodgers says many people sign up before they’re fully committed, and that can make a difference.“A lot of people who come in are in what we call the pre-contemplation stage,” she explained, “They’ve been thinking about it, but they’re not quite sure. But they come in and they sign up anyway. ”

Believing you can succeed, and approaching fitness as a long-term commitment, sets the tone for everything else.

“If you have thought about it and you’re insistent on coming to the gym, you are the type of person that is going to stick with it,” said Rodgers.

Find Your Community
Rodgers says accountability is invaluable for success.“Having camaraderie, having competition, having that community, it’s going to get you where you need to be goal-wise.”

Whether it’s a workout buddy or a group class, surrounding yourself with support can keep you motivated when the excitement wears off.

Think Beyond the Scale
Rodgers encourages members to connect their workouts to something bigger than just weight loss.
“It’s important not only for longevity, but for your family and friends. If you want to be here to have a healthy and long life with them, then this is the place to do that.”

When fitness becomes about living better, not just looking better, it’s easier to stay consistent.

Expert Tips to Stay on Track

-Start small: Set realistic goals you can actually achieve.
-Find your tribe: Join a class or have a friend keep you accountable.
-Focus on health: Think about long-term benefits, not quick fixes.

With the right support and attitude, those January resolutions can turn into habits that last well beyond the new year.
