It has been a very nice day around southern West Virginia, with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. Highs were in the upper 70s and lower 80s, 5 to 10 degrees above the seasonal normal depending on your location. Tonight, it will be pleasant again, with lows in the upper 50s, above the normal but not quite by as much as the highs were today.
Tomorrow, there will be a chance for showers as a backdoor cold front pushes into the region. The front is coming from the northeast rather than from the northwest as the fronts usually do, which gives it its name. It will trigger some showers in the eastern parts of the state, for us that’s the Greenbrier Valley and Pocahontas County. While the showers make for a not so nice weekend, the rain is going to be a welcome sight nonetheless, as the areas that will see the rain are in the worst drought that we’re seeing anywhere in West Virginia at the moment. Any showers will be scattered and should not drop too much in the way of rain totals. The chance for showers continues for the second half of the weekend as well. Temperature-wise we’ll keep the warm weather trend going, with highs in the lower 80s and lows in the upper 50s.
Later in the extended forecast, the chance for rain becomes much better and the coverage of showers more widespread. An area of low pressure will push towards the area but stall out to our west. That will give us an extended chance for showers, with some storms thrown in for good measure.
The rain totals over the next week, according to the European atmospheric model, will be over 2″ in many areas. This is great news in terms of alleviating the drought. The only downside is that there could be some ponding water on the roads and standing water in low-lying spots.
With the extra cloud cover and with some cool air being pulled into the area from the north, temperatures will cool off a bit. Highs will be in the lower to middle 70s. Lows don’t fall quite as much as the highs and will still be close to the normal.
