McDowell County, WV (WOAY) – The West Virginia Public Service Commission has opened proceedings into the town of Gary’s water system, saying that it has received a number of complaints.
The PSC will now determine whether or not the utility is distressed or failing.
A press release says that the commission has received a number of complaints, including water pollution, water loss, and a lengthy boil water advisory.
The West Virginia Bureau of Public Health has also said that the water has high levels of iron, manganese, alkaline metals, and other contamination sources in it.
There is also a reported 76% unaccounted for water loss.
The Consumer Finance Bureau says lead has been found in the water, and there are corroded pipes, structural issues, exposed wire, and a lack of proper monitoring.
Gary was ordered to enter into an agreement with the McDowell Public Service District, allowing the county to begin operating the system.
