Warm and stormy now, nice weather by midweek

It is a partly cloudy afternoon around the region, and it is warm again, with temperatures in the 80s in most locations and the heat index in the 90s to near the century mark again.
Unlike last week, where we were able to tie a record high in Beckley, the record high for today is well beyond reach (it’s 100 degrees, set in 1936). Any heat that we’re feeling is about to go away, however, as a cold front is getting ready to sweep through the area.
With the front, there are chances for strong to severe storms, with damaging winds the main threat along with flooding rains in areas that wind up underneath the storms. There is still plenty of moisture to work with for these storms and with plenty of recent rain and saturated ground, quick water rises are possible.
Tomorrow, the front finally swings through, and there will be more chances for strong to severe storms. The same threats are in play tomorrow that we’re facing today. Temperatures will be a bit cooler; how much is dependent on how quickly the cool air makes it into the area.
After the front makes it through, temperatures will be very pleasant for a couple of days before warming back up in time for the Independence Day holiday. Highs will be in the lower 80s from Tuesday through Thursday, and lows will be in the lower 60s – very pleasant weather for the middle of the week!
This coming weekend, highs will warm back up again and will again be pushing towards 90 degrees. But just as quickly as they rise, they’ll cool off again as the ridge breaks down and a front makes its way into the region.
