Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – Most West Virginians using natural gas to heat their homes will notice their gas bills will be cheaper this winter.
The Public Service Commission has ruled on how much the various natural gas utilities may charge to purchase gas this heating season.
Natural gas utilities have to file purchased gas adjustment cases with the Commission every year, showing how much they intend to pay for gas in the coming year.
The price utilities pay their suppliers is then determined by the market.
The Commission reviews the proposed amounts and adjusts the price it will allow companies to charge their consumers.
This year, the market is steadier, and requested prices have decreased.
The amount approved for Mountaineer Gas is down by nearly 20 percent, and Hope Gas experienced an almost 40 percent decrease.
Mountaineer and Hope Gas companies serve almost 89 percent of gas customers in West Virginia.
Out of the 12 state gas companies, Peoples and Standard Gas requested increases.
Across the board, the average requested amount fell by slightly over 11 percent, while the average amount granted dropped by almost 20 percent.
