Showers end, leaving behind a nice weekend

There is plenty of sunshine around the area this afternoon, mixed in with a few clouds. There are a few showers around as well, but they are very widely scattered – in fact, at 5:30 p.m., there was one small complex of showers and isolated storms near the Virginia line, and another near the Kentucky line, with nothing in between.
A few storms are also showing up on the radar over the northern portion of the state, but overall it’s a nice evening to get out, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s now, dropping into the lower to middle 60s by tomorrow morning.
There could be some patchy fog to deal with tonight, as there is still some moisture to work with, especially in places that have seen rain over the last few days.
Tomorrow, all areas will see plenty of sunshine. In some of the higher elevation locations, an isolated shower or storm could pop up. The mountains provide some extra lift, and that could trigger some showers in the afternoon and early evening, fading away after sunset. Otherwise, the day will feature plenty of sunshine. Temperatures will be close to normal, with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s area-wide.
The weekend will be quite nice in the area. Saturday will see a similar setup as Friday, with widely scattered showers and storms in the higher elevations. It will be slightly warmer, however, with highs in the mid-80s in most areas and some of the southwestern areas pushing the 90-degree mark, and some areas will get even warmer than that. Sunday it will be warm again, and high temperatures will tick up a degree or two from Saturday’s highs in most areas.
Next week, a front will approach from the northwest and increase and widen our shower and storm chances. There is still a lot of moisture to work with for the front, and rainfall totals could be high in some spots. We’ll be monitoring chances for flooding, but fortunately, the lack of recent rains will reduce the chances somewhat. With the extra cloud cover provided by the system, temperatures will fall back into the upper 70s and lower 80s for highs by Wednesday and Thursday. Lows will be in the mid-60s again, part of the overall trend that sees little movement for the nightly lows throughout the seven-day forecast period.
