Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department investigates shooting

WYOMING COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported disturbance near Oceana Wednesday afternoon.

The Department was called into action when shots were fired near East Turkey Dip road. Multiple department officials arrived on scene after the call came in.

“Yesterday at approximately 2:30 p.m, 911 received a call of a shooting near the Oceana area Turkey Dip of Wyoming County,” said Wyoming County Chief Deputy Brad Ellision. “Our department responded. It came in as a gun shot wound to the leg.”

The investigating officers are looking at the scene where the shooting happened. The identity of the victim has since been confirmed as Michael Douglas Kennedy, 40, of Long Branch.

“The suspect, or the victim, died on scene,” Ellison said. “From what we gather, he was hit in the upper part of the leg, then probably also in the artery.”

The Sheriff’s Department has acquired a video of the situation. It’s waiting to gather more information before looking at charges.

“We’re still investigating,” Ellison said. “We’re looking over everything. We still have possibly other people to talk to. If anybody as any information other than what we know right now, they can contact the sheriff’s department at 304-732-8000 extension 301.”
