WVU Women to Face Elon in NCAA First Round

WOAY – For the second straight year, West Virginia women’s basketball is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers will be the sixth seed in the Bridgeport region, and will play Elon in the first round on Friday in College Park, Maryland.

WVU is coming off a Big 12 Tournament championship run last week, their first conference tournament title since 1989, when they won the Atlantic 10 tournament. Mike Carey’s squad pulled off three upsets in consecutive nights over Oklahoma, Texas, and Baylor to earn the league’s automatic bid.

The Mountaineers are making their seventh NCAA tournament appearance in eight years, but have not advanced past the second round in any of those appearances. In the one year they did not make NCAAs during this current run, they finished runners-up of the WNIT. Their best finish in the NCAA Tournament was the Round of 16 in 1992.

Should West Virginia win Friday, they would face either Maryland or Bucknell in the second round.
