WVU Tech student nurses show empathy and service, delivering Thanksgiving hope to 32 families

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – WVU Tech Student Nurses Association had the heartwarming opportunity to assemble 32 Thanksgiving meal baskets for fellow students and community members in need.

Recognizing that the holiday season often amplifies existing life challenges and creates new pressures, the student nurses ensured each basket contained a complete Thanksgiving meal, including turkey/ham and its accompaniments.

Nurses are committed to community well-being.

According to Sarah Bays, president of the association, they challenged all the nursing students, from freshmen to seniors, to help gather basket items.

Bays said she is proud of the nursing program for its biggest turnout yet to help pack the Thanksgiving baskets.

“I spent a lot of time going to different stores and looking for items. We got lots of donations from local businesses,” said Freshman Nursing Student Elijah Stewart. “It really demonstrates what our job as nurses is, to show empathy and be of service to the community. And that’s exactly what this was.”

Sophomore nursing student Alyssa Bush donated with a couple of her classmates.

“I helped organize the things into groups, then helped package them up and deliver. It’s important because so many people around us are in need of food right now,” she said. “A lot of them probably would not have had a Thanksgiving meal if it weren’t for us making and preparing them, so I think it was truly a blessing to be able to do it.”

For more than 20 years, Nursing at Tech has prepared Thanksgiving baskets.

One basket is going as far as Greenbrier County.
