FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WOAY) – As a team, WVU Tech Softball always looks for volunteer opportunities to give back to the community.
They decided on Toys for Tots because children are always a good cause. The organization had a record-breaking 2023, distributing more than 10 million toys to needy children.
“We just want to help bring a good Christmastime, a good holiday season to those that are less fortunate than us,” said Toys for Tots Volunteer Olivia Barnett.
We have many good people in our community who do so much to give back. Toys for Tots is important because it provides children in need with toys, books, and other gifts, as well as a positive lifetime memory and hope for the future.
“Obviously, people are struggling, but the ones that can help, they do,” Barnett said. “As long as we’re able to put a smile on somebody’s face.”
According to the shortstop, frequently volunteering on behalf of children and the less fortunate is important to her and WVU Tech Softball.
“I come from a family where giving is just as important as receiving. For me, it’s always been like, you gotta help anyone that you can help. And as a team, I feel like everyone has the same set of standards.”
Being altruistic comes naturally to the shortstop and her teammates, whose selfless concern for others at Christmas and beyond is driven by a desire to help without obligation.
“Just coming out and supporting the kids and being able to help out is really, really rewarding for all of us,” she said. “We love giving back to our community; it’s a really great feeling.”
