WVDNR expects higher deer harvest due to less food for deer

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) The West Virginia DNR says it expects to see a higher deer harvest this year due to lower mast production.

Mast refers to the fruit, seeds, and nuts that wildlife eat. Mast production is fourteen percent below the statewide average.

In particular, the acorn harvest from red oaks and black oaks is down significantly.

When that happens, game has to move more to find food.

Soft mast production is up slightly compared to last year but still below the average.
