WV Turnpike closed following tractor trailer accident resulting in chemical spill

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – The WV Turnpike’s north and southbound lanes near mile marker 62 in Mossy closed following a tractor-trailer accident this morning.

Local authorities report that a tractor-trailer got into an accident, resulting in 44,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate contained in the truck spilling onto the road.

The Mount Hope Fire Department reports that the driver suffered minor injuries.

Turnpike Detour A is currently in effect while the road is cleared.

Traffic going north will take North Beckley Exit 48 to US 19, then travel to I-79 near Sutton.

Drivers can take I-79 to Charleston.

Semi-trucks will not be permitted to travel down 61 Deepwater Mountain Road.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) reports the southbound lanes are open and will experience detours as the cleanup continues.

WVDOT anticipates the northbound lanes will remain closed for several hours.

Emergency crews are on the scene.

Newswatch will provide more details as they are made available.
