WV Govender Patrick Morrisey signs bill 3336

Wheeling, WV (WOAY) – Governor Patrick Morrisey held a press conference in Wheeling, West Virginia today, signing a bill that changes regulations surrounding the capping of oil wells.

The governor said there are more than 21,000 abandoned wells in West Virginia alone. House Bill 3336 gives the state more flexibility in the way it approaches the problem.

The bill allows operators to piece the casing of abandoned and orphaned wells and fill them without removing the central casing.

Governor Morrisey said that doesn’t work in some situations.

A press release said the new standards have been tested in the field under a West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection project, and they meet safety standards.
