Fayetteville, WV (WOAY) – A Fayetteville farm market is helping shoppers on SNAP, WIC, and senior food vouchers get more fresh produce for their money.
New Roots Community Farm takes part in a program called SNAP Stretch, which gives shoppers using food benefits an extra discount on fresh fruits and vegetables. Market manager Morgan Mase says the savings add up fast for seniors.
“Each individual senior voucher that says it’s worth $10 will actually go stretch to 30 or $40 in our market,” Mase said.
SNAP shoppers can see discounts of 50 to 75 percent on fresh and dried produce, according to Mase. The senior voucher program runs June 1 through October 31, and the SNAP discount is available year-round.
For the farm, Mase says the payoff is watching the community take fresh food home.
“We love seeing people walking out of the market with their big baskets of fresh produce. That makes us really happy, and it makes us feel like our work is worthwhile,” Mase said.
