Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) On Friday, Governor Patrick Morrissey announced the launch of West Virginia’s Dolly Days Read-a-Thon, a statewide reading challenge celebrating Dolly Parton’s commitment to childhood literacy.
The Read-a-Thon is open to all K-5 students in West Virginia. Starting October 1st, the Read-a-Thon challenges participants to read at least 25 books before December 31st, averaging about 2 books per week.
Participants must track their progress with a paper reading log, available for download online or at participating public libraries. The log includes an optional creative section where students can draw a picture depicting their favorite book or Read-a-Thon moment.
Completed logs must be submitted online or delivered to a public library by January 5th, 2027. Winners will be announced on January 19th, in celebration of Dolly Parton’s birthday. Those who complete the challenge will receive a special completion sticker, and 100 randomly selected participants will receive special-edition Dolly Parton suncatchers from Blenko Glass. Five winners will be awarded a butterfly suncatcher and a set of butterfly bookends, and one grand prize winner will receive a literary-themed gift basket alongside all aforementioned prizes.
The West Virginia State Library will display submitted artwork during February and March.
