WTT finishes regular season, semifinal schedule set

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WOAY) – After 19 days, World TeamTennis completed its 2020 regular season Thursday at the Greenbrier.

The four semifinalists had been determined entering Thursday, but the Orlando Storm and Chicago Smash were in contention for the two seed; while they were going to face each other in the semifinals regardless, the higher-seeded team gets to determine the order of play in the semifinals.

San Diego and Springfield were eliminated from playoff contention earlier this week, but ended their seasons with a victory in their respective matches. San Diego’s win over Chicago, combined with Orlando’s win over Washington, means the Storm will be the #2 seed against the #3 seed Smash.

In a preview of the second semifinal Saturday, the Philadelphia Freedoms defeated New York Empire 23-17 to cap off a 12-2 regular season.

Thursday’s results

San Diego Aviators 23, Chicago Smash 22
Springfield Lasers 21, Orange County Breakers 19
Orlando Storm 25, Washington Kastles 15
Philadelphia Freedoms 23, New York Empire 17

This weekend’s schedule

SEMIFINALS: Philadelphia vs. New York (2 PM Saturday), Orlando vs. Chicago (5 PM Saturday)

CHAMPIONSHIP: Noon on Sunday
