FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (WOAY) – The new roots community farm is an amazing place to get high-quality produce. With everything locally grown and sourced, wintertime is just as good as any to eat and shop local
Wintertime flavors do not have to come from far away, everything we need is grown right here in the mountain state.
“We grow our own fresh produce, loads of root vegetables, salad greens, as well as other crops. We also source things regionally that we don’t grow, we have pantry items such as flower and syrup and honey,” said Valerie Slone.
On top of all those options, the farm is excited to offer things called root crops, these are plants that can last a long time and are great for the cold months.
“This winter we have a variety of root crops that you won’t see the rest of the season. We’ve got things like watermelon radishes, black radishes, parsnips, carrots, celery root and spinach,” said Valerie Slone.
With all these crops still available, you may wonder how it is possible to have such a variety, through advanced farming techniques such as high tunnels and crop row cover, New Roots is able to offer these crops year-round.
For those who are getting their hands dirty at the farm, it is about so much more than just a good season, it is about offering the highest quality food to the community year round.
New Roots Community Farm is open on Thursday and Friday from 1 – 6p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 11a.m. – 5 p.m.
