Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) – Many southern West Virginia residents woke up this morning to a fresh coating of snow on trees and sidewalks.
Negative wind chills and temperatures in the low twenties provided the perfect combination, leaving many drivers braving slick roads.
The West Virginia Division of Highways has crews actively working around the clock, treating roadways with rock salt and brine solution to improve driving conditions.
But the question is, when does salt become ineffective?
Salt treatments primarily composed of sodium chloride work best when temperatures are above 20 degrees Fahrenheit. At these temperatures, the brine solution struggles to keep water in a liquid state even with salt present.
Other deicing treatments like calcium chloride or magnesium chloride may be used instead.
