What is Holy Week?

Easter is one of the most important Christian holidays, and the week leading up to it is known as Holy Week. Local pastors Rev. Brian Copney Sr. and Rev. Don Stilgenbauer toldĀ  WOAY about the significance of these eight days and what this week means to them.

Copney started with brass tacks:

“Holy week is where we as believers commemorate Jesus’s final coming into Jerusalem, as well as his dying and resurrection. Sunday is the final descent. We call that Palm Sunday. When Jesus came into the city and the people laid palms in his way, and they shouted, ‘Hosanna!’ as he came into the city.”

Stilgenbauer explained the meanings of the other celebrated days:

“We celebrate Maundy Thursday, the night that Jesus gave Himself up, was arrested, and turned Himself over. And Good Friday, of course: the night in which He was crucified. And then, the good news of His resurrection on Sunday morning.”

Beyond the egg baskets and chocolate bunnies, Easter is a time for hope, remembrance, and gratitude, as Copney shared:

“For myself and my family, understanding that most people in the world are moving so fast this week, we take the time to slow down and remember the sacrifice and the suffering that Christ did for us.”

Stilgenbauer tied in a timely verse recited during church services:

“The tradition is to say, ‘He is risen,’ and the response is, ‘He is risen indeed.’ Christ has risen, and because He has risen—because the tomb is empty—we have hope, even in the midst of our darkest times.”

No matter your beliefs, easter and the days leading up to it serve as a reminder to spend time with friends and family, connect with your community, and reflect on something bigger than ourselves. Copney encouraged us all:

“Just be mindful of each other, enjoy each other’s company, enjoy the day and the blessings that Christ has given us.”

New Hope Baptist and Beckley Community United Methodist welcome all to their Holy Week services, and you can also celebrate Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and of course, Easter at a church near you.
